Volker Perthes, head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS), stated that he has received reports regarding the existence of at least 13 mass graves in Geneina, Darfur region, Sudan. In a speech to the UN Security Council announcing his resignation, Perthes mentioned that the mass graves contain victims of attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group, and allied Arab armed factions against civilians, mostly from the Massalit ethnic group. He confirmed that UNITAMS and other UN missions are documenting these violations, stating that these acts could constitute war crimes if verified, and highlighted incidents of "sexual violence and other forms of violence against women." He expressed ongoing horror at the prevalence of sexual violence and other forms of violence against women, emphasizing the need for credible investigations and accountability for these crimes, as well as support services for survivors. He praised the efforts of women in Sudan and community support groups, such as emergency rooms and resistance committees, which continue to provide urgent relief assistance despite the risks. He noted that civil activists are making efforts to lead numerous anti-war initiatives, urging parties to stop the violence, meet urgent humanitarian needs, and revive political dialogue.
