Spain's coach, Luis de la Fuente, commented on Ibrahim Diaz's decision to represent Morocco instead of Spain. Reports have revealed that Diaz's choice stemmed from the Spanish Football Federation's refusal to inform him about his possible inclusion in the upcoming Spain squad in advance.
When asked about Diaz's decision to play for Morocco, De la Fuente stated in remarks to the Spanish newspaper "AS": "I respect his stance. Everyone is free to make their own decisions." He added: "For me, there are three fundamental principles for selecting players for the national team: first, the person must be capable of playing for Spain; second, they must be willing to; and third, they must be chosen by the coach."
He continued: "What matters most to me is the willingness without any pressure or obligations, and that they accept equality in rights and duties. If I stray from this fundamental point, you will always find me against you." He concluded: "I haven't spoken to Diaz. I am the one who decides on call-ups or not, and people do what they believe they should do. I have certainly been the coach who wanted to choose him more than anyone else... I respect him a lot and wish him the best... I have complete and absolute respect for him."
