The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the foreign ministers of the Arab League countries have agreed to appoint former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as the new Secretary-General of the organization.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said that the Arab League foreign ministers, after receiving the necessary mandate from their leaders, endorsed Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the Arab League. He succeeds Ahmed Aboul Gheit, whose term ends on June 30.

Fahmy will hold the position for a five-year term, until 2031, officially commencing his duties on July 1.
According to the statement, the decision was made during a meeting of Arab League ministers held in the Jordanian capital.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry also expressed its welcome of this move and wished the new Secretary-General success during his tenure.
Additionally, the ministry extended its gratitude to the outgoing Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who served for the past decade, for his valuable contributions in addressing Arab world issues and defending the interests of the Arab League countries amidst various challenges.
