U.S. Military Strikes Iran in Retaliation for Hormuz Ship Attack

U.S. Military Strikes Iran in Retaliation for Hormuz Ship Attack

On Sunday, the U.S. military announced it launched strikes against Iran in response to an attack on a civilian ship in the Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that the military carried out a new round of strikes on Iran after Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps targeted a Cyprus-flagged container ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM stated, "One civilian crew member is missing, and the ship is unable to continue its voyage due to a fire on board and significant damage to the engine room."

The strikes were executed under the directives of President Donald Trump, CENTCOM confirmed.

A U.S. official told Axios that the American strikes in Iran are targeting missile launch sites, drone locations, air surveillance radars, and missile storage sites.

Reuters reported that Iranian media indicated explosions were heard on Qeshm Island.

Additionally, Iranian media reported explosions in Bushehr and Asaluyeh in southern Iran.

The UK's Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced on Sunday that it received an alert about an incident nine nautical miles east of Oman.

The UKMTO reported that military authorities had informed them that a container ship was damaged, causing a fire onboard.

Later, the UKMTO confirmed that the crew members of the targeted ship, east of Oman, had evacuated and were currently on a lifeboat.

Iranian state media had earlier reported that the Revolutionary Guard's navy announced early Sunday morning that it had closed the Strait of Hormuz until further notice.

This announcement followed the guard's navy firing warning shots at a ship, claiming it attempted to pass through an unauthorized route, as reported by Reuters.

According to an Axios report citing a U.S. official, the Revolutionary Guard launched a missile at a commercial cargo ship attempting to cross the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to it.

U.S. officials told Axios that Washington had requested Iran to issue an official statement confirming the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and to cease targeting ships, but the attack occurred instead.
