The Iranian cleric Mohammad Bagher Kharazi, who is a relative by marriage to the Supreme Leader's family, Mujtaba Khamenei, has sparked significant controversy by discussing internal disputes within the power hierarchy. He alleged that Iranian President Masoud Bezhashkian has resigned or threatened resignation 28 times since assuming office and received a stern warning from the Supreme Leader not to repeat such moves.
Supreme Leader's Warning on Resignation Acceptance
Kharazi stated that the Supreme Leader informed Bezhashkian that if he resigned again, his resignation would be accepted. This message was reportedly conveyed officially to government officials, prompting the president and senior officials to back down from the notion of resignation.
Kharazi quoted the Supreme Leader saying: “If Bezhashkian resigns again, we will accept his resignation.” He emphasized that this warning curbed resignation threats within the government, adding, “This is why they backed off, softened their stance, and stopped threatening to resign.”
Changes in the National Security Council and Negotiations
Discussing reshuffling decision-making positions, Kharazi claimed that the Supreme Leader intends to make changes within the Supreme National Security Council and the Iranian negotiation team. He mentioned plans to dismiss Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Mohammad Bagher Zulqadr and appoint the Supreme Leader's military advisor Mohsen Rezaei in his place. He also claimed that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi would not be involved in negotiations.
Zaid Abadi Calls for Official Clarification
Kharazi’s remarks triggered reactions within Iranian political and media circles, with prominent journalist and political activist Ahmad Zaid Abadi urging official bodies to clarify the truth behind these claims. He argued that in the current climate, these allegations would only exacerbate political tensions.
Zaid Abadi reminded that during the reformist regime, Kharazi threatened opposition political activists, including threats of invading their bedrooms and placing bombs in their mouths. He indicated that such a history establishes his political aptitude, warranting no further description. He concluded by calling on responsible authorities to provide clarifications on these claims before their wide spread leads to a new political crisis.
